Furnaces can last for a long time, but like anything else, they will wear out eventually. There are many ways to tell if you need a new furnace. Some are easy to check by asking yourself a few questions:
Have you had it for longer than 15 years?
Are you repairing it more and more often (and spending more)?
Have you noticed your heating bill increasing?
These are all tell-tale signs that it's probably best to get a new furnace. Just like a car, there comes a time when it's less expensive to buy a new one than to keep repairing the old one. Furnace repairs can become very expensive and occur more and more often as a furnace ages.
An immediate sign that you need to replace your furnace includes if it is releasing carbon monoxide. This is incredibly dangerous, as it can cause death if enough of it is breathed in. Even in small amounts, carbon monoxide poisoning can cause dizziness and adverse side effects. To check if your furnace is releasing carbon monoxide, take note of the following:
First, check the burner flame. The flame should be blue, not yellow. If it is yellow, carbon monoxide may be escaping.
Second, check the chimney, there should always be an upward draft.
Look for rust on pipe connections or the flue
Evaluate how you feel away from home. Do you feel more lively or healthier? This is a good indicator when done in conjunction with other signs of carbon monoxide emissions.
